Meebo for iPhone Stands Out from The Messaging Bunch

It would be interesting to count how many IM apps there are in the App Store. Off hand, I can personally think of close to ten. Meebo, a company that was first on the iPhone scene with their iPhone optimized Web client back in the days before the iPhone 3G, is the most recent member of the group. They announced their native iPhone app recently, and judging by just how good it is, I understand why it took them this long to release it.

It’s fair to say since the introduction of the iPhone, mobile Safari has had a tough time with users. From the intermittent crashing issues back on firmware 1.1.3 to lack of caching of pages in tab view, people quickly felt that they needed a replacement, one which would more over mirror that of their desktop browser on their Mac or PC. Up until now though, these replacement browsers, on the iPhone at least, have come in the form of existing independent developers looking to make the odd quick buck trying to flog different overall browsing experiences to the App Store crowd.

It seems like I am reviewing a Twitter app every day. Between the growing Android market for Twitter apps, the race to the top of the BlackBerry App World, and the never ending stream of Twitter iPhone apps, there are a lot of options from which to choose. Putting Android and BlackBerry aside, for the iPhone alone, I can think of at least 10-15 serious contenders for the crown of the best iPhone Twitter app. Until now, even with all the new apps I have tried, I stuck with the app I have been using from the beginning, Echofon. It was the app that balanced simplicity and features the best. Until now, or at least that is my first impression of Twitbit.

It’s that time again, time for a review of a new Twitter Android app. We have reviewed Seesmic, which we loved, then we reviewed Twidroid Pro, which we loved even more, and now we are reviewing Tweetcaster, which we love the most. So, what is so special about Tweetcaster for Android? Well, if I had to sum up the app in one sentence, I would say it is so nice that it looks and acts like it belongs on the iPhone, not an Android phone. The UI is truly stunning, the experience is unbeatable, and the features are many.

Putting aside the whole Android vs iPhone debate, there is no denying that Android is taking off in popularity thanks to phones like the Droid and Nexus One. For me, one of my biggest complaints about the iPhone platform, and I am not alone here, is the lack of background apps. The Twitter iPhone app industry is booming. I have never actually counted, but I am pretty sure the App Store has more Twitter apps then it does any other kind of app. Developers feel the space heating up and release new Twitter apps daily. Unfortunately, most of the time, these apps are missing one of the key components needed in a successful mobile app. Some of them are overflowing with so many cool features, things that Twitter’s API just began supporting. Generally speaking, those are the kind of apps that are lacking in the user experience arena.

Seesmic Finally Makes Twitter Usable on Android

Android still has not reached puberty. This is true for so many reasons starting with frequent bugs and crashes and ending with a relatively small App Market compared to its competitors. Not to mention the fact that there is no single app to take screen shots. However, for me, one of the main reasons I could not use an Android phone as my primary mobile device is a serious lack of a quality Twitter app.
