No, I am not talking about Google’s free Navigation application for their Android phones, I am talking about a free application for all iPhones with GPS called Skobbler. Not without its quirks, Skobbler uses open-source mapping technologie called the OpenStreetMap Project and overlays turn-by-turn directions onto your iPhone.

Android seems to be on fire lately. While RIM is trying so hard to stay in the game, only the most loyal BlackBerry users can say they are excited about the new BlackBerry Torch. The newest data is that Android not only passed iPhone in terms of mobile OS percentage in the U.S, it also surpassed RIM for the number one spot. The recent study points to a 33% of the U.S consumer market belonging to Android with 28% going to RIM and 22 % to Apple.

With the 200,000 plus apps in the App Store, many people ask me how I decide which apps to review. The answer is that there is no one answer. If I come across an app that catches my attention and keeps it after I have tried the app, that is an app worth reviewing. If someone reaches out to me on Twitter in a non spammy way, and tells me they have a new app, I will try it out. If I like it and feel there is a need for such an app, I will review it. There have been many other scenarios in which I reviewed apps, but with Tweetlist, the situation was different.

I recently had a discussion with a friend who claimed that my standards for mobile apps were way too high. He said that my reviews are too critical and harsh on developers and that I need to be more understanding of how much work goes into developing apps. I disagreed. I explained that while I do respect the work that is done by young developers, and I give them credit for that, with all the rising competition of the various app stores, developers have to raise the bar or throw in the towel.
