I have to be honest, I am not the biggest Pictionary fan out there. It might have something to do with the fact that I can’t draw if my life depended on it. I am close to mastering the stick figure.
For this reason, I ignored the fact that every time I opened the App Store on my iPhone or the Google Play (I am still not used to that) on my Galaxy Note, there it was, Draw Something, a Pictionary-like game right on top of the charts on both phones.
I wanted to write about this viral app, I really did but when I downloaded it, I just couldn’t get too into it due to my advanced artistic skills. But then, the news kept coming. 25 million users, a possible $200 million Zynga acquisition, topping of the Facebook app charts, talks of a TV show, 2 billion drawings, six figure daily revenues (one billion paid ad impressions per day), and (are you sitting down?) a ridiculous 3,000 pictures a SECOND!
If you have downloaded Draw Something, you surely noticed that the interface could not possibly be simpler. The actual game is also super simplistic with no winners and losers, just the collection of coins to then purchase additional colors with which you can draw.
Users seem to be engaging with this app on levels we have only experienced before in games like Angry Birds and very few others. 12 million daily active users, according to OMGPOP, the creators of this new mobile phenomenon. You can see some of the best drawings users have created here.
Draw Something has been downloaded a whopping 20 million times and is the number one app in 80 countries worldwide. Remember, the app only launched five weeks ago.
While its simplicity is its selling point, the game does definitely lack some basic features you would expect to see in a game that is based on social interaction. This includes the obvious ability to save your drawing and share it on Facebook and Twitter. Strangely not possible.
Either way, the game is super addictive and insanely successful so if you, like me, don’t consider art to be your specialty and have not yet downloaded Draw Something as a result, it can no longer be ignored. Go download the free version to test it out and you can grab the ad-free version here as well.
