You Know Those Talking Pets on iPhone/Android? Yea, So do 41 Million Other People!

Among the many apps that are consistently in the top spots of the App Store and the Android Market, are these talking animal apps by Outfit7. There is a whole series of these goofy apps that allow you to talk to them and have them repeat after you. The apps truly are entertaining and fun, and not only if you are 2 years old. I confess to some quality time with the Talking Tom Cat.
I cannot imagine that these apps were too difficult to create, nor do they have any sort of innovative technology like we have seen in apps like Word Lens. Yet, the company just announced that their apps have been downloaded a whopping 41 million times in six months. Compare that to the 42 million downloads of Angry Birds in a year and you have a little perspective.
I always smirk when I see these apps in the top of the App Store categories but I never considered what the download numbers must be, for the apps to stay there. This is really an amazing number if you think about it and all it says to me is what I have been saying for months now. Developers have to abandon the preconceived notion that the more features an app includes, the better it will sell. In fact, if anything, the opposite is true. Simplicity always wins in this game.
Anyway, if you have kids or are still in touch with the kid inside you, you might want to check out these apps, I recommend the talking cat to start with.
