Terminology PH for iPhone – The Best Literary Resource Ever
Let me start here, the iPhone should have come with a dictionary app. Lately I have taken to reading the works of Fyodor Dostoevsky and I find it useful to have a dictionary handy for some the bigger words. There are many options for dictionaries on the iPhone like Dictionary.com’s iPhone app, but these apps are limited at best. Terminology PH for iPhone is the not only the best dictionary app available, but in my opinion, it is the dictionary app Apple should have made. It is more than just a dictionary, it’s a complete literary resource.

Yes, it does give you definitions but it also allows you to use some of the webs best services, like Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wolfram Alpha and Google, to really grasp what it is you reading or examining. Terminology PH is $1.99 in the app store and is a must have for anyone looking to really dig into the English language.
The UI of Terminology is beautiful. The app was designed with functionality in mind, and this is always a plus. The app starts with a search box. Like most dictionary apps, you type in the word you want to define. As you type a word, the app begins to pull up words that match your search with the same starting letters.
When the word you want pops up, or you finish typing it, you click on the word which brings you to a new screen that shows the definition, part of speech, and some other useful information. This is normally all you need but for those times when you just need more information you can open up the services I mentioned before in Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wolfram Alpha and Google to take your search to the next level or levels depending on how far you want to dig.
All of these services are opened in a new browser page inside of Terminology. I really enjoy the involvement of Wolfram Alpha, and have found it to be a great resource. If you don’t know what Wolfram Alpha is, the best way to explain it is as a tool to expert answers on the anything from the most random of questions, to the things that get lost in translation.
Wolfram Alpha has it’s own stand alone app in the app store for $1.99, but in terms of using at as a language tool you get in this app for no extra charge, I call that a win win situation.

Terminology also stores your searches for quick rechecking at a later date of offline. I also really enjoy the built in spelling suggestions
for those times when I know the word, but don’t have it front of me to fact check my spelling. Another great feature is the use of less and more specific terms that can be expanded upon and also defined within the app.
Terminology PH for iPhone is a incredibly powerful tool and one that can have multiple uses for students, teachers, writers and people like me who just like to expand there Vocabulary. The app is book like in its set up and allows for quick and effective searches. I highly recommend this app and for $1.99 in the app store you can’t go wrong.
