Inception for iPhone App Review

Movie apps suck. Yup, I said it. Movie apps tend to be huge in size, lacking in features and after the movie is released totally useless. I find myself being a sucker over and over again when the new blockbuster movie comes out downloading the app that accompanies it. I almost didn’t download the Inception app based on previous experience but now that I have I can’t see it leaving my iPhone anytime soon.

What the creators of the Inception app have done that no other developer has seemed to come up with is create an app that is more than just a glorified ad for said movie. Inception is deemed as being a dream machine that transforms the world around you into a dreamworld using augmented sound to create a unique dream scape. The app obviously can’t make you dream but it does take you on a wild ride, if you let it.

Much like augmented reality augmented sound takes existing sound, in this case the amazing soundtrack from Inception composed by Hans Zimmer and adds elements of the sound around you creating a completely unique and original “dream” world. Upon launching the app you are greeted with the Inception logo and the familiar piano loop used through out the movie.

After the app loads you have the option of sliding a button down to enter your first dream. As you sit and enjoy the soundtrack to the movie the app takes sounds from all around you via the iPhone headphone microphone. Some sounds it plays gently while others it distorts or loops creating amazing tones and beats to the already playing soundtrack. The only way to describe this app is as being surreal.

There is absolutely nothing like it in the app store. Everywhere you use this app will create a different sound scape so you never hear the same thing twice. As you use the app more and more you can unlock new dreams which are actually new songs from the movie to mess with. The developers behind this app encourage you to play this app with your life and not the touch screen. What do they mean by this?

I believe they mean to try it out everywhere you go. Maybe take it for a walk around the block or sit quietly outside. However and wherever you choose to use it the possibilities are endless and since every dream comes with an exclusive song from the movie it seems to be a real win win.

Inception for iPhone is free in the app store. It is a large download that will require WiFi or iTunes but when it is done you will not be disappointed, go download it now!
