iPhone 4 Jailbroken!
By: Hillel Fuld
And it begins. Let me just say that I am yet to jailbreak any of the various Apple devices that I own, but I will not say that the thought never crossed my mind, it has. At the end of the day, the ongoing battle with Apple updates and the technical issues that accompany the jailbreaking process are the reasons I have not done it yet. Having said that, after last week’s drama of jailbreaking iPhones become completely legit (at least legally) and today’s news of the iPhone 4 jailbreak surfacing, there are going to be a whole lot of people hacking the heck out of their iPhone 4.
Engadget has a video of their jailbreak attempt, which did not go too well at first, which by the way, along with the danger of bricking a perfectly good iPhone is precisely the reason I don’t go near that. Having said that, the Web is now filled with people who successfully jailbroke their iPhone 4, so we know it is working.
While the idea of free apps is of course appealing, that would not be my reason to jailbreak. I am personally a fan of rewarding iPhone developers for their work. Besides, between me and you, $.99 cents or even $1.99, which is what most of my apps cost, is not going to kill me or you. I would do it for one reason, and one reason only, to piss off Apple. Apple’s jail-like policies and their rejection of apps like tawkon and Google Voice are enough of a reason to jailbreak the phone and open it to apps not approved by Apple itself.
Having said that, I am pretty sure I would not jailbreak my iPhone 4 for a completely different reason. According to initial reports, a jailbroken iPhone 4 does not support Facetime, Apple’s video calling technology. For me, right alongside the amazing Retina display on the iPhone 4, Facetime is one of the better features on the new iPhone. As much as I would want to protest Apple’s policies, I prefer having an iPhone 4 with Facetime.
