Device Locator for iPhone Keeps Track of Where Your iPhone Is
The iPhone is one of the most well-known phones around, and one must be careful when using it in public, since most people know it has a lot of value. As a precautionary, many users have software setup to keep track of where there iPhone is. To date, there only two ways of doing so. One, by having a jailbroken device, or, two, by purchasing mobile me ($99). Now, there is an amazing app called Device Locator for iPhone in the App Store which allows non-jailbroken users to locate their device, for the price of $2.99.

The developer claims it will work only on iDevices that can handle multitasking and have a GPS, which narrows it down to the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4. However, the description of the app says it will work on the iPhone 3G, but it will have to be open all the time if you want real-time locations.

Device Locator has two modes in it. One is for normal use, which works by pinging a server with the location every time your iPhone connects to a new cell network, giving you a general idea of where your iPhone is. The ideal example of usage for this would be keeping track of where your child is. The other is for emergency uses, where it shows you up-to-date locations on a map every minute, and will be much more accurate than normal mode. If you choose to enable emergency mode, don’t be surprised if your battery drains faster than normal.
Although the website is fairly basic, at the moment, the developer is actively updating it with many new things. One of these updates will be a switch to the more reliable Google apps engine. He also hopes to add a full tracking map, and the ability to see how long the device is at each location.
If you aren’t too keen on paying $99 for mobile me, definitely give Device Locator for iPhone a go, for $2.99.
