Real Racing for iPhone App Review – As Real As It Gets

Real Racing for the iPhone contains some of the best graphics that I have ever seen on a mobile device, and is incredibly fun as well. This is really where the iPhone shines, compared to various other smartphones that can’t run anything even close to it. Although it carries a hefty price tag, at $4.99, it really is one of my favorite racing titles on my iPhone.

As its name states, this application is a racing game. This is a real racing game, and I mean authentic, legal racing, not illegal racing, shown in most racing game titles for the iPhone. An example of this would be most of the Need for Speed franchise, where you drift around corners, destroy police vehicles, etc (although their latest game, NFS Shift, provides Real Racing with some healthy competition). However, this is not a comparison article, or a review on NFS Shift, it’s a review on Real Racing, so I’ll be talking strictly about that now.

The objective of the game is simple – cross the finish line before your opponents do. If you manage to get first place, you will unlock a new tournament/map in which you can compete in. There are a plethora of challenges/tournaments that you can compete in, with each one increasing in difficulty. Also, you start the game out with a very basic car, and rank up to receive more powerful cars that you can use to compete in races.

The game is one of the most realistic games I’ve ever played on the iPhone. You can see your current speed in the speedometer of the car, along with your current lap time below, and which lap you are on over on the left. You also have an excellent variety of tracks that you can race in. Along with this, there are many more minor details which come together to give you an amazing experience, on the go.

There are several ways you can control your car, along with a variety of camera modes that you can play around with to get what you are comfortable with. By default, you are to use the iPhone’s built-in accelerometer to steer left and right, but in the options of the game, you can switch it so you then have to actually touch the steering wheel and slide your finger in the direction that you wish your car to go in.

As I mentioned earlier, this is an authentic racing game. Your objective isn’t to drift the longest, but to brake appropriately for each turn to get max speed on the straightaways so you can pass the finish line in first place. You are also encouraged to keep replaying tracks to try to beat your best time, earning trophies if you do really well. When you first start up the game, you have the option to go through a tutorial, edit your profile, start a quick race, dive into your career, credits, options, GTI Winner’s circle, and connected. You know, the works, except for something new, not seen in any other game – GTI Winner’s circle. Basically, a while ago, Firemint (the developer of this app) had a contest, sponsored by Volkswagon, where they were giving away one VW GTI every week for six weeks. This just provides you with the leaderboards, along with the winners for every week.

The game will be you entertained for hours. Once you’ve finished career mode, you can go online (known as “connected” in the main menu) and go head on with your friends, either through bluetooth or wifi, or you can compete in leagues with random people.

Everything put together, Real Racing is a solid game for the iPhone, and in my opinion, the best racing game currently available. Although it will run you about $5, you have to consider what you’re getting – a solid single player game, along with online mode for even more fun, either against random people like you, or your friends! Real Racing is a hit in my eyes, definitely take a look! If you’re hesitant about the price, you can try out their free version to understand the concept of the game.
