I am a smartphone user and I do not think desktops will become dissappear all together. i think we shall still need them for the heavier task such as graphic designs. Home users, younger users, and students? If it hasn't already surpassed, I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen. Other areas I could see it taking over are in professional positions that are fairly mobile and socially interactive - sales, community development, PR, journalism, etc. The main area where I don't see mobiles replacing desktops is in highly technical positions that require a lot of processing power, screen space, precision (or specialized) input devices, and many hours in front of the computer. Design, programming, sciences, financials, etc. A mobile device (even one as big as the iPad) is just not conducive or effective for this kind of work. It depends on the application and the user.
