Space Frenzy for iPhone – Good Attempt, Not Quite There Yet

By: Aaron

We now live in an era in which even young men, such as Alex Britton (the developer of Space Frenzy), are coding. Most of them code for Apple, creating creative iPhone Apps in the well-known iTunes App Store. This is one of Alex Britton’s latest applications, called Space Frenzy!, which is available for a mere 99 cents.

Space Frenzy! for the iPhone is a simple game, where you control a UFO (Unidentified Flying Object). The objective is to dodge all the asteroids for as long as you can. To control the UFO, you use your finger, and the game ends when an asteroid collides into it. Generally speaking, you lose within 10 seconds, which is quite frustrating.

The thing is, you lose when the asteroid hasn’t even completely hit your UFO. This definitely needs to be fixed, and hopefully Alex implements the fix in the next update. Once fixed, the game will truly be fun, and possibly even addicting. The concept of the game itself is extremely simple.

On a positive note, Open Feint is embedded into the application, allowing you to see your high scores as well as how your friends did in the game.

When you pay 99 cents for an application, you have a certain level of expectations for the level of professionalism of the application. This is really where the application needs some help. Many things seem extremely unprofessional, such as exclamation marks appearing everywhere. Three of the options in the main menu contain an exclamation mark. When you lose, it has four exclamation marks. The weird thing is that sometimes, the ‘Main Menu’ button has an exclamation mark while sometimes it doesn’t. Quite odd if I can say so myself.

Another thing that needs improvement is the ‘Info’ button (available in the main menu). It would be much more professional and appealing to the end user if Alex had made the info button open another page with Credits as well as a tutorial/demo. Just my two cents.

To sum it all up, I think that Space Frenzy needs a little bit more polishing, but maybe later down the road, it will be worth the 99 cents. For now though, I recommend that you stay away from it unless the cons of the app are okay with you. 99 cents isn’t much anyways, so why not take a look?
