Weet Woo for iPhone Will Change the Way Kids Use the iPhone
By: Hillel Fuld
Just yesterday my boss’s son joined us at the office after staying home from school. It wasn’t long before he was playing on my iPod Touch, which lasted a good solid few hours. Now, we are talking about an 8 year old kid here, and I could not help but think that the fact that he could pick up the device, find what to play with, and stay entertained for hours, is a clear indication of how good the Apple device really is.
The problem is, and whenever I go traveling with the family, I rack my brain to figure out a solution to this, how do you filter out what your kid watches/does on your iPhone/iPod Touch? Do you want your child playing all the gun games available in the App Store for example? I always thought it would be great to just give the iPod to the kids in the back seat, and let them enjoy themselves, but how do you do that without worrying of what they will watch on Youtube or see on the Web?
The answer? Weet Woo for iPhone delivers thousands of hand picked Youtube videos for all ages. The videos are all child safe and are presented in clear categories, enabling the child to choose a topic they are interested in, and start watching in no time. The videos are all hosted on Youtube, so you will need a fast enough connection, so the entire ride is not spent buffering, but if you have that, this app is a must have for the average parent.

As for the Weet Woo interface, when opening the app, you are presented with a scrollable list of categories including Animals, Fun Shows, Learn, Music, People, and Places. When choosing a category, the app opens up a secondary filtering system enabling you to drill down even more. So, for example, if you chose People, you can then choose to watch videos about anyone from Dr. Seuss to Albert Einstein.
Here is where the app gets really interesting. When selecting your category, the app opens up a screen with one video on top and a very sleek Album Art-like scrolling display along the bottom. You can then scroll between the available videos in the same way you scroll between the album art on the iPhone, only smoother. This is a really sexy part of the app, and it shows that the developers really put a lot of thought and effort into developing this app. They could have easily just put a list down there of all the videos and that would have been fine. Fine, but average. Now the app is anything but average.
After you find the desired video, you click on it and are directed to the iPhone’s Youtube app, which open smoothly and provides a superior viewing experience, assuming your connection is fast enough. When you are finished watching the video, you click Done in the Youtube app, and you are automatically directed back to your previous screen in Weet Woo. The whole experience is smooth and user friendly.
The app also includes a Search functionality that enables you to search using a word from the title. A simple search for the word “Bird” provided me with what seemed to be tens of results. The app is useful, usable, and developed to perfection. I was pleasantly surprised by this app, I honestly did not expect it to be this good, but it is.
