A Portable / Lite version of iMovie for your iPhone – ReelDirector by Nexvio Inc.
Many of us use iMovie on our Mac (Or Windows Movie Maker if you’re on PC) to edit our videos, whether it’s for home use, YouTube, or Vimeo. ReelDirector, by Nexvio Inc. provides mobile video editing right on your iPhone 3GS. So whether your in a car, bus, train, or on the street, you can edit your video where ever you go. It does an outstanding job of editing, for a mobile phone. In fact, it does such an exemplary job editing, that it’s been rated by one of the top 10 apps of the week by Gizmodo, as well as a variety of other rewards and compliments from other places, including Macworld and Wired. Again, keep in mind, we’re talking about a phone here. Not a computer.
I understand some video editing softwares are like a maze; you just get lost. This is happened to me countless times in Final Cut Pro, as well as Adobe After Effects. You just don’t know where to get started! However, this is definitely not the case with ReelDirector, which provides a simple to use interface that anybody can utilize to join several different video clips on their 3GS, add text, transitions, and even add music to the video! Obviously, it can’t do everything iMovie or Windows Movie Maker can do, but it does the job. Beautifully. It turns your “shattered clips into a fully polished video.”
ReelDirector provides, just like all other video editing software, a drop-and-drag timeline. You can easily move throughout the clip and adjust whatever you like. It features multiple text watermark styles as well as 27 gorgeous transitions you can use to make your video seem much more professional, making your video appealing to your audience.

When editing, all your clips will show up on the Timeline, mentioned before. You can then add and remove transitions and text as you wish. Before exporting, you can preview your entire clip, making sure it looks just right. The transitions can assist you in blending from one clip to the other, or simply transitioning from one setting to another, in an appealing way. Also, adding to the long list of features, you can add opening credits, as well as ending credits. Now, by default, it says ‘Made with Nexvio ReelDirector.’ What I don’t like about it is, even if you change it for 1 video, and then you make another video and want to add the opening/ending credits, you have to retype everything; It doesn’t save what you used previously, which can get annoying eventually if you’re editing several videos at the time, like I sometimes do for my YouTube Channel.
Once finished editing, you can easily upload your edited video to YouTube, or save it to your camera roll.
For adding music to your video, you cannot simply use the music in your library on your iPhone. It gives you an ftp server (example: 192.111.11.1:2111) that you have to go on (On your laptop). Once you go there on your browser, you have to give it all the music files that you want to use on your iPhone 3GS. It supports the .mp3 and non-DRM .m4a sound formats. The bad thing about it, is that it did not work for me. I went to the FTP server it told me to, and I got an error. I tried it on several different browsers, still no dice. This may just be me, I really do not know. I’m going to contact the developer regarding this issue, and will keep you all updated.
Also, keep in mind, this application only works on the iPhone 3GS with firmware 3.1 and above, as it utilizes the video camera and the extra enhancements that were provided in 3.1 software update.
All in all, ReelDirector is a rock solid iPhone application that can definitely assist you in making your video seem much more professional on the go. It really is the best Video Editing application (That I know of) on the iPhone Platform. It even utilizes the new features added in the 3.1 software update, and the developer, Nexvio Inc. just keeps pushing out those updates, adding more features and bug fixes all the time. This shows what a wonderful developer this application is made by, and you should definitely take a look. The only issue I’ve ever had is the one I’ve mentioned earlier in this review – the music feature. Again, it may just be me, I’ll ask the developer and keep you updated. ReelDirector will run you about $7.99, which is on the more expensive side for an iPhone application. However, you need to consider the features of the application itself, and who knows? You may find it worth the price, as I did.
