WiFi File Transfer: A Much Needed BlackBerry App

It is no secret that mobile consumers are beginning to pay more attention to software over hardware. If a few years ago, a phone was judged by how slim or slick it was, today, most people buying a phone will first inquire regarding the mobile platform and how many apps are available for that specific device. This is of course magnified by the iPhone, Apple’s App Store,  and its 1.5 billion downloads. With all the hype surrounding the iPhone and its endless apps, it is easy to forget that there are other mobile platforms out there with some serious app numbers, might not compare to the App Store, but Symbian, BlackBerry, and Android are well on their way.

While the various stores are filled with endless apps, a lot of them cute little pointless apps that you will download to show a few people, then eventually delete to free up room for the real apps that matter, very few apps I have used are useful on a daily basis. Wifi File Transfer for BlackBerry is one of those very useful and necessary apps all BlackBerry users should use. Even in today’s advanced mobile arena, the whole phone/PC synchronization process still seems a little primitive. Now I know that many phones can sync wirelessly over Bluetooth, but the standard is still to connect your PC to the device via a USB cable, something you do not always have access to, and a process that limits your mobility. WiFi File Transfer solves this, and in  style.

This app enables you to connect your BlackBerry to any WiFi enabled PC/Mac in order to transfer files. The app is completely idiot proof. Upon launch of the app, assuming you have WiFi enabled on the phone and wherever you are located, the app presents you with a URL to type into your computer’s address bar. Once you do that, your browser becomes an Explorer-like view of your phone’s directories. You can then easily add a folder, and begin to transfer files over Wifi. No more need for USB cable, and no need for Bluetooth pairing, or any other primitive form of wireless communication.

As I mentioned, this app is on my device’s home screen, and I use it almost daily. If there is one word that characterizes this app, it is simplicity, and in today’s competitive market, that is the name of the game. Who can make the most feature packed app that is simple to operate and can be used by anyone between the ages of 4 and 85? WiFiFile Transfer has succeeded. If I am looking to give some constructive criticism to the developer, who I have had the privilege of working with in the past, I would say the App’s UI can be freshened up a little, perhaps a new modern look. I would also say that the view on the PC looks a little old fashioned as well, but when clicking the HTML version, that goes away. Might be worth it to make the HTML version the default view.

Other than that, WiFiFile Transfer is a must have for any BlackBerry user as it makes your file transferring completely seamless and familiar.
