Turn your iPhone Into A Remote Control for VLC Media Player

One of the characteristics of the fast pace world we live in, is that new products replace old ones every day. When a new mobile phone comes out, one of the considerations consumers have when thinking of purchasing it, is what is coming out tomorrow? Will it be better than today? The answer is generally yes, and most good products are replaced very fast. This is true with mobile phones, it is true with computers, and it is true with software.

There are not many applications on my computer that I can say have been there for more than a year. Every time I like an application and start using it, I find something better relatively quickly. This does not apply to VLC Media Player, which has stuck with me from the very beginning. VLC is a video player for your computer that is completely open source, lightweight, and plays any file type imaginable.  You name it, VLC will play it. The program is quick, easy to use, and has not been outdone by any of the competition, although there have been attempts.

Now that we established that you should be using VLC Media Player, let me tell you about an app for your iPhone that will turn your iPhone/iPod Touch into a full fledged, fun to use, and extremely convenient remote control for VLC Media Player. The name of the app is VLC Remote (no surprises there) and it rocks. It takes a few minutes to set up so that the iPhone recognizes your computer through Wifi, which requires configuration mostly on the VLC side, but once the settings are right, launch the app, it detects the copy of the VLC running, and you can fully control your media player.

The app enables you to browse your computer for any file you want to play, select it, play it, and control it all from your iPhone. Some of the controls supported are Stop, Play, Pause, Volume, Next and Previous Track, Full Screen Toggle, Playlists, External Drive Access, and much much more. The app also works in landscape mode, giving you access to more control and customizable skins. The app works on Windows XP, Vista, Mac, and Linux.

VLC Remote is a feature packed app to control a feature packed media player on various platforms, what else could you ask for? The thing I loved most about this app is its responsiveness. It displayed zero delays and after pressing any button on my iPod, by the time I looked up to see if the operation was performed on the computer, it was already done. The app works flawlessly, and is a pleasure using. The only possibly negative thing I could think to say here is that the setup might be a little challenging to complete newbies, but besides that, assuming you know basic computing, this app is a must have.
