BuzzMe for BlackBerry: A Crucial Addition to your Device
By: Hillel Fuld
Without taking sides in the whole BlackBerry vs. iPhone debate, I will say that one of the main arguments to get a BlackBerry over an iPhone is its openness, or better yet, Apple’s very closed policy. This app illustrates the point perfectly. BuzzMe completely changes the core functionality of your BlackBerry, how it responds to incoming calls, emails, and text messages. You can be sure that Apple would never allow such an app on the iPhone, in fact, the core functionality change is exactly the reason they gave Google for rejecting their Google Voice app from the App Store.

Now that we discussed Apple and BlackBerry, let me tell you a little bit about this fantastic app. Basically, any BlackBerry user knows that one of the annoyances caused by their phone is its inability to vibrate and ring at the same time, as well as your lack of customization of the vibrating mechanism. The way the BlackBerry responds to an incoming call is it vibrates for a few seconds, then starts ringing. This is not only annoying, it causes you to miss a lot of calls.

BuzzMe and BuzzMe Pro solve this problem, and they do an awesome job at it. Using the Pro version, you can customize the way the phone vibrates, how long each vibration is, and whether or not you are notified of missed calls. However, the coolest part of the app by far, is that you can fully customize the LED light that notifies you of new calls, emails, and text messages.

You have the ability to set up different color LEDs for email, phone, or SMS, and even better, you can set a different color for each email account. So, the way I have it set up, my BlackBerry blinks one color for a call, one color for a text message, one color for work email, and one color for personal email. The Lite version, which is free, supports all these features for calls only, which is OK, but I strongly recommend shelling out the $2.99 for the Pro version.

The app runs in the background and with the Pro version, you can have it automatically restart when the phone resets. It uses minimal battery, and does not slow the device down at all. As I stated in the title, this is a crucial addition to any BlackBerry device, as it adds a lot in the convenience department, and makes a really cool conversation starter showing off the different LED colors (especially the disco ones).
